Leibniz said it was the first question of metaphysics. He maintained that after all the speculation about the nature of the universe, whatever it may be, there is still this fundamental question. It has been taken up at “Cosmic Variance” (Discover Magazine’s science blog) more than once. This was the most recent. There are a variety of comments that show up on the blog.
