Is the difference between the ANCOVA adjusted means on the dependent variable greater or less than the difference between the unadjusted means on the dependent variable? Why?
Assume that the covariate in a two-group study is correlated negatively within groups with the dependent variable and that the mean of the covariate is higher in the treatment group than the control. Further assume that the unadjusted mean on the dependent variable in the treatment group is higher than that in the control group. Is the difference between the ANCOVA adjusted means on the dependent variable greater or less than the difference between the unadjusted means on the dependent variable? Why?
