Research Marketing Questions

Consider your company and product or service selection in Week 1. You may select an existing type of product or service or a new product or service but it must be global or multi-regional. Once you have selected your product or service, you must define the size and type of company that provides the product or service (available from annual reports). This need not be elaborate but must include total number of employees, production volume, distribution methods, and so forth. Company and product or service selection is a critical part of this project. You must ensure your proposed company can implement the marketing methods discussed in the text.

Key to creating an effective marketing plan is the ability to analyze the environment in which the product or service will be offered. The Week 1 assignment allows you to begin to understand various reports and how they can be used in your marketing plan.

Purpose of Assignment

This assignment is designed to help students analyze and interpret primary and/or secondary data and research. First, students will be provided with a marketing report that allows for preparing basic executive level data insights. Second, they will be allowed to pick a company and product or service. This assignment will help prepare students for the development of their marketing plan. Students will be creating a marketing plan (refer to Marketing Plan and Outline document) so they may want to choose a company and product or service that has data readily available or where they can use demographic/psychographic data to provide insights.

Assignment Steps

Part 1:

Analyze the Week 1 Business Growth Overview dataset. This is a marketing report generated by an analyst for the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Marketing at a large corporation. The analyst is new and has provided summary data but no insights or commentary for the SVP.

Construct a minimum 525-word memorandum for the SVP providing insights and commentary. The memorandum should include your analysis of the following:

  • Major areas of increase and decrease in revenue or type and/or category of business
  • Trends that are evident in terms of revenue or type and/or category of business
  • Insights that would help formulate marketing strategies to either continue growth or reverse decline
  • Additional analysis you (if you were SVP) would like to build a marketing goal and strategy or strategies (and why)

Part 2:

Select a global or multi-regional (does business in more than one country) company and one of its products or services that will serve as the basis for your marketing plan. You should obtain two years of annual reports as well as two years of 10K reports (provides a comprehensive overview of the company’s business and financial condition and includes audited financial statements) for your data source. Once you have selected your product or service, you must define the size and type of your selected company that provides the product or service (available from annual reports). This need not be elaborate but must include total number of employees, production volume, distribution methods, and so forth. Record this information in a summary document as outlined below.

Company and product selection is a critical part of this project. You must ensure your proposed company can implement the marketing methods discussed in Marketing Management.

Prepare a minimum 175-word summary document and send it to your instructor as a record of your selection. The summary document should include the following:

  • Name of Company
  • Location of Company Headquarters
  • Name of Product or Service selected
  • General description of company (number of employees, revenue, type of ownership, web page, etc.)
  • General description of product or service

Format your assignment consistent with APA guidelines.

This article places a negative light on the new EPA chief Scott Pruitt. the article starts out by saying that Scott Pruitt does not believe that carbon dioxide is a primary contributor to global warming. The article continues by saying that the new EPA chief does not believe what most scientist believe about the causes and affects of global warming. The reporter in this situation begins the story negatively by sighting that Mr. Pruitt does not believe in what most of the mainstream scientist believe to be true. The story continues using quotes and from Mr. Pruitt that contradict NASA and NOAA, as well as, emphasizing the affect of global warming. If Mr. Pruitt does not believe in global warming he may have an alternative set of beliefs that the story does not mention. It does not give the people a full view of who the man is because it only gives one side of the story. This story shows sign of a potential media bias against the new EPA director. The story gives off a notion that if you do not believe what the author believes then you are wrong. It would be better perhaps if the writer provides multiple perspectives with evidence and that would allow the reader to form their own opinion.

This should be addressed to Cindy Hurt;

According to CBS news (2017), Scott Pruitt is not convinced that carbon dioxide is a primary source of global warming. His opinion is not popular with the Environmental Protection Agency or scientists. I feel like the news article painted him in a negative light, but it could have been much worse. It included opinions of people that opposed his views, but there was no opinions supporting it. I think to be objective it should include both. It sounds like he is not sold on global warming. There are still plenty of people who feel the same way. I do not really buy into it. Now, I will be the first to admit that it is something that I have little knowledge of. I would have to do a lot of research on both sides to be more informed. The article presented did not give me much to go on.

I would have liked for the article to go further. It would need to include a section that says there are still those who still do not buy into global warming. According to Bryce & Day (2014), there are still several skeptics, and even scientist do not agree on all aspects of global warming. There are even science teachers in the schools that are skeptics, and they do not want to teach the children wrong. Just because a person is a scientist does not mean they are democrat, for global warming, or believe in evolution. They are like others who do research and give opinions.

I think the article is obviously biased. The author wanted it known that many people felt Pruitt was an unfit choice for the position. I do not think there has been enough time to know that. He stated that he did not think it was a primary contributor. They act like he is completely denouncing global warming. He should have just said it could be due to all the sinners on Earth because any statement that comes from his mouth at this point will be considered ludicrous. They are all stirred up and against him.

interview summary/synthesis

Assignment Instructions: The Interview

Writing Exercise: Interview Summary/Synthesis

For this assignment, you will submit on the FINAL copy as there is no DRAFT option. This assignment is designed to help inform a topic that interests you, and the information your gather here will be used in your Proposal Letter assignment.

For this assignment, you should be interviewing a person who has expertise about a topic you are interested in. Please note that you should be conducting an actual interview; you should now be summarizing an interview conducted by someone else.

Part #1: Choose a Research Topic and an Interviewee

You do not need to submit this portion in writing, but you do need to accomplish this in preparation for your research assignment.

In preparation for your research proposal letter in the next topic, you will need to choose a topic for your proposal. This research proposal letter will be directed to an audience who can create change (Congressperson, business administrator, or other similar audience). In the proposal, you need to suggest a change or a solution to a current problem. Examples of strong proposal topics would be things like funding ideas for an animal shelter, starting a recycling program in a community, suggesting a better plan for public transport, or another idea that interests you. You will be proposing solutions for these issues. Choose a topic that you are passionate about and for which you will be able to develop at least one solution. While this information should be enough for your to choose a topic, please consult the assignment sheet within Topic 7 if you have more questions about this assignment.

Once you choose a topic, it’s time to choose a credible expert to interview on that subject. In other words, you should avoid choosing an interviewee who is a close friend or family member unless that person truly is an expert in the field. This credible expert should have 10+ years of experience in his or her discipline. Choose an interviewee who not only could offer some specific details about the problem but one who may also be able to offer suggestions of a plausible solution. use the information contained in the lesson presentation to secure and conduct a successful interview.

Part #2: Summarize and Synthesize Your Interview

When you summarize and synthesize, you take the smaller pieces (the sections of the interview) and develop them into one cohesive piece. Doing this exercise will help you prepare for the research proposal letter, where you will need to incorporate at least a few ideas from the interview.

To successfully summarize and synthesize, you might find it helpful to follow this sequence for your essay:

1) Provide Background Information:
In your introductory paragraph, introduce your audience to your interviewee. What is his/her name? What is his/her experience? if relevant, where is the interviewee employed?

2) Summarize the Interview:
While you want to avoid the all-too-predictable question and answer format, you should provide information about what you learned from the interview. Take a look at your original questions, group them into categories, and use those categories to build your body paragraph(s). Also, you may note the interviewee’s reactions in your summary as well. Was the interviewee nervous about answering a question? Did he/she seem knowledgeable in the subject matter? Make this summary work for you by including whatever details and responses you feel are important and will help you when you write the research proposal.

3) Synthesize the Interview:
In the conclusion, synthesize the interview. To synthesize just means that you should consider all of the information you gathered from this interview and draw conclusions. What did you learn from the interview? How did the interviewee and/or the interview help you gain a deeper understanding of your topic? Other findings?

No source citations are required for this assignment, but please review the rubric to get a better idea of how you will be assessed.
