Assignment 2: LASA # 1: Literature Review Paper

The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to select a topic in the particular area in which you have an occupational or research interest, and to complete a literature review of the topic, using a minimum of ten scholarly references. This will allow you to demonstrate mastery of the program outcomes for the B.S. criminal justice program at Argosy University.

You may want to review the following documents:

· A sample literature review

· A document illustrating how to set up your word processor for APA style

· A “Guide for Writing a Literature Review”

· A PowerPoint tips document

For additional resources, conduct an Internet search using these keywords: writing a literature review.

Based on your review of the most recent, relevant research findings on your chosen topic, submit a final version of your literature review paper, integrating feedback received from your instructor. Be sure to include a research/focal question, synthesis of the literature you reviewed, well-established conclusions, and points of discussion and/or future research.

· Begin the review by defining the objective of the paper. Introduce the reader to your focal question. What is this question intended to address? You may state your “question” in the form of a problem if you like. Describe the topic for your literature review and why you chose this topic. Explain why you think it is important. It is also useful to tell the reader how the review is organized in your introduction section, before you transition into the body of the review.

· Organize your literature review paper by themes/theories/concepts, rather than article by article. If there is one major theme you want to highlight, state the theme. If there are three major themes or streams of thought on the topic, briefly name them—and then organize the balance of your literature review around those three streams. Think of themes, theories, concepts, lines of thought, and ideas as organizing strategies for your literature review. Your creativity in this assignment is not the content or findings but the clarity with which you organize the review and create a context for understanding the focal question.

· When you are done introducing the first line of thought, create a new paragraph to discuss studies which present another line of thought or opposing view.

· Your literature review should hit the high points of each article. You should not discuss a single article, one by one, like a grocery list. Zero in on the main theme or finding and then move on to the next theme. Remember, this is a synthesis, an integration of all the things you have learned. You are creating a discussion on paper, which in turn gives the reader a context for understanding where the scholarship has been, where it is currently, and where it likely will be heading next. Provide enough details to help the reader understand the significance of the studies you cite without “rebuilding Rome.” Be sure to evaluate the studies and offer critical comments on any shortcomings you’ve observed or that have been reported by the authors.

· Discuss the main findings and their implications. Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study and contribute to the existing body of knowledge? Complete your review by drawing conclusions about your body of research and identifying gaps in the research which still remain to be explored, maybe even by you! Make an argument as to why your research question is important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic.

Requirements

Apply current APA standards for editorial style, expression of ideas, and formatting of the text, headings, citations, and references. Remember to use your own words to describe and evaluate the articles. Avoid quoting the material and also cite works when you are discussing someone else’s ideas. Be sure to integrate any and all feedback received from your instructor. Your paper should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page. The body of the paper should be no less than 5–6 pages in length.

Foundations Of Mental Health Counseling – Client And Counselor Wellness

Historically, the counseling field has placed emphasis on promoting wellness in clients and counselors.  The ACA stresses the promotion of wellness as the foundation of the counseling process(Tanigoshi, Kontos, & Remley, 2008) as cited in Newsome & Gladding (2014).   Myers, Sweeney & Witmer (2000) emphasized that wellness involves many aspects of life including the physical, intellectual, social, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and environmental. They stressed that helping clients move toward optimal wellness potentially involves many approaches. In this discussion assignment, you will explore strategies for promoting client wellness and your own personal wellness.

Tasks:

In a minimum of 200 words, post to the Discussion Area your response to the following:

A. Describe how you may incorporate/explore positive wellness approaches in the counseling process with clients.

B.  How do you plan to enhance your personal wellness as you move through the Clinical Mental Health Program? Review the Wheel of Wellness and the Indivisible Self models of wellness in the text book (pages 163-165).  After reviewing the models, discuss your personal wellness plan. In what areas of your life can you improve your wellness? In what ways are you already doing a good job of attending to wellness?  How will you know when you need to attend to your own self care? Please provide at least 3 examples and provide a potential time line(i.e. balancing family, work and school, preparing for comprehensive exams, and  transitioning into practicum and internship).

I need more sleep but I have so much I have to do daily. When I become stressed I know I have to attend to self care I also pray and meditate daily to calm my spirit. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed but when I pray I’m reminded to trust GOD. I enjoy drinking blueberry tea and listening to books on Audible. I love making my house feel like a spa with the smell of oils, candles, and soft lightening (lamps). I spend most of my time in the home with complete silence when I’m alone and this allows me to think. When I listen to music it helps change my vibes. I like blues and country music to laugh and allow my imagination to wonder.  I like classical and jazz music to relax. I listen to neo soul and gospel music to feel empowered.  I enjoy old school hip hop and a few of the new school hip hop to laugh, smile and sometimes hype myself. I listen to classic rock, r & b, and pop to reminisce on good times.  Once a year I enjoy renting a jeep and driving to the beach.

C. Refer to the ACA code of ethics and identify two standards that address the topic of self-care for professional counselors.

Your discussion should clearly reflect your thoughtful and logical analysis of the information.

Support your rationale and analysis by using at least two resources from professional literature in your response. Professional literature may include peer-reviewed journal articles you can access through the Argosy University online library resources; relevant textbooks; and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (websites ending in .edu or .gov).

Be sure to read all of your classmates’ original posts and respond to more than two of your classmates’ posts. Your responses should be substantive, meaning they should encourage further dialogue and discussion, encourage your classmates to think about other aspects of the topic, compare your response to your classmates’ responses, or ask a relevant question, to better assist you with your understanding. Responses such as “I like/I agree” or “I don’t like/I don’t agree” are not complete enough.

Your discussion posts and all written assignments should reflect graduate-level writing skills and appropriate use of APA style, including in-text citations and references.

Submission Details:

· By the due date assigned, post your responses to the Discussion Area.

· Through the end of the module, respond to more than two of your classmates’ posts. While responding, comment on the similarities and differences between what you and the two classmates identified as challenges. Offer an additional suggestion, maybe even from your own post, on how your classmates might overcome a challenge noted in their posts.

You should include evidence (from the article, from your own reasoning, from examples, from experiences, etc.) to support your response.

Due Dates
Please refer to the calendar due dates. Please remember the peer review is a separate grade and has separate due dates.

Purpose and Learning Objectives
The purpose of writing a response paper is to encourage you to read actively and to evaluate the selected articles critically. While it is possible to read an article just once and gain an understanding of the main idea, much of the depth and nuance of the article will only be discovered after multiple readings.  Moreover, your grasp of the ideas and concepts presented in the article will remain superficial until you apply those ideas and concepts in your own writing. As you write, you should practice making clear claims about the material you’re writing about and should practice supporting those claims with evidence from the text and from your own reasoning about the subject.

Minimum Requirements

  • 600- 900 words  (approx. 2-3 pages)
  • An interesting and informative title
  • MLA format with in-text citations and works cited page
  • An introductory paragraph that tells readers what article you are responding to and that includes a thesis statement
  • One or more paragraphs that summarize the article
  • One or more paragraphs that respond to the article
  • A conclusion paragraph that wraps up the main ideas in the essay

You should not expect to earn a grade higher than a 60% if you do not meet the minimum requirements.

Process for Completion

  1. The first step in writing a good response paper is to actively read the article assigned. Active reading means consciously identifying the thesis, purpose, audience, and tone.  It means determining what main points the author is trying to convey with his or her article.
  2. Next, it might help to construct an outline or graphic organizer that will help you visualize the claims and the evidence supporting those claims. Once you have a firm understanding of the article, start formulating your response by asking questions:
    1. What do I really think about this topic? Why do I think that?
    2. Do I disagree with any points being made? Why?
    3. Do I agree with any points? Why?
    4. Can I think of additional examples or evidence that support or refute the author’s claims?
    5. Can I connect something in the article to my own personal experience?
    6. Can I apply the ideas presented in the article to some other subject?
  3. At this point, you should start to formulate your response. Once you have an idea of what you want to say, start drafting your essay.
    1. The introduction should clearly identify the author and article you’re summarizing. It may include a bit of brief summary to show what the main point of the article is. It should include a thesis statement that presents your response to the article.
    2. The body paragraphs should begin with a summary of the article that you’ve chosen (one or two paragraphs). Be sure to accurately represent the ideas and arguments from the source. Next, you should develop your response (between one and three paragraphs), usually with a statement of agreement or disagreement, followed by your reasons, examples, and evidence. Remember that the purpose of a response paper is to add your own voice to the mix, to join the conversation.  I want to read your reactions, your interpretations, and your opinions. Take this opportunity to develop your own voice.
    3. The conclusion paragraph should reinforce the ideas you stated in the essay.
  4. Once you’ve drafted your paper, go back and review how you’ve organized your paragraphs (do they have topic sentences?) and integrated evidence (all quotes should be seamlessly incorporated into your own sentences).
  5. When you’re happy with your draft, you should complete the peer review process to get feedback on your writing.
  6. After you have read the feedback provided by your peers, continue revising and editing your draft.  You might find that some comments are more helpful than others. You are not obliged to take anyone’s advice, but you should at least consider every suggestion. When you are comfortable that the essay is in good shape, upload it to eCampus. The final draft will automatically be sent through “Safe Assign,” which is an originality checker used to help identify plagiarism.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas without giving credit and is a serious academic offense.  It can range from:

  • Turning in a paper any part of which you did not write,
  • Cutting and pasting a paper together from various sources without attributing the sources correctly,
  • Changing a few words but basically keeping most of the words and sentence structure of the original,
  • Using the ideas of another without giving credit to the person who originally had the idea.
  • Using the exact words of the source without using quotation marks even if you give the name of the source.

Refer to the syllabus for consequences of plagiarism in this class. For more information, see http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/
